Hextech Crafting gives players a chance to earn exclusive things such as skins for free. Most common way of doing so is by opening Hextech Chests. But, there’s also a Masterwork Chest, a better version of the two. Here’s everything about it and why you should keep an eye on it.

What is a Masterwork Chest?
Masterwork chest is a part of Hextech crafting. Once opened, it rewards players with exclusive content. They are the best chest you can get in the game, as they will always contain something that can be bought exclusively with RP. There are several ways to acquire them, both for free and by spending money. Generally, they work the same way as ordinary chests do, but yield better rewards.
Do you need a Key for Masterwork Chest?
Just like with the regular chest, you also need a key for it. If you have gotten your chest as a bonus drop, a key was a part of it. Same can be said if you had exchanged a gemstone for a Masterwork chest. On the other hand, if you have already used the given key, you can get another one by purchasing it from the store, being an honorable teammate or exchanging event tokens for it. Same key is used for all chest types in League of Legends.

How to get it?
Unlike normal ones, Masterwork Chests are much harder to obtain. You can’t get them just by playing, but rather by being lucky or spending some money. What do we mean being lucky? Most common way of getting it is by having it as a bonus reward for opening a normal chest. Exchanging a gemstone for it from the Loot is another way of getting it. Those are the only two ways you can get it for free. If you want more of them, you’ll have to purchase them from LoL store.
Depending on the package you want, you can pay from 165 RP to 2250 RP. As getting keys is not always easy, we recommend getting bundles to ensure you can open your newly obtained loot. To purchase them, navigate to the store from League Client. Then go to “Loot” tab and get your desired item.
Masterwork Chest or Hextech Chest
Hexctech Chests are much more common as players can get them simply by playing. You can earn them by getting S, and one new chest can be earned each week. Do note though that you can earn only one chest per each champion in a single season. Masterwork Chest is a more premium version of two.
Biggest difference between them is that you can’t get a champion shard from the Masterwork Chest. Thus, they’re much more attractive since players are guaranteed to get one of the items that can be purchased only by RP such as skins or emotes.
What can I get from Masterwork Chest?
While they usually contain great rewards, you will still need to be a little lucky to get the best rewards. Here are the chances for different items that it contains.
Masterwork Chest Drop Rate
70% – Skin shard
10% – 525 Orange Essence 525
10% – Emote Permanent
10% – Ward Skin Shard + 150 Orange Essence

25% – Champion shard
8.57% – Emote Permanent
11.5% – Ward Skin Shard + 150 Orange Essence
3.5% – Summoner Icon Shard + 150 Orange Essence
Both chests share the same bonus reward chances though:
Bonus Drops
3.6% – Gemstone
0.04% – Mythic Skin Permanent

Conclusion
Mastework Chests are, frankly, quite weird. They’re not as rare as Gemstones, but not as common as Hextech Chests. They’re a great way to get nice skins without having to worry about getting champion shards. If I had to choose between these chests, I’d go for Masterwork one every day of the week.
